Generalization, regularization, ensembles, and online learning offer different ways to reason about what a method can learn.
When the data keeps changing,
what makes a good decision?
A journey from data science to simulated financial markets. Different methods, different perspectives, and room for your own ideas.
Ideas → Decisions → Evidence → New perspectives
Learning, generalization, and sequential decisions meet in a market that keeps moving.
Generalization, regularization, ensembles, and online learning offer different ways to reason about what a method can learn.
Data turns ideas into models and decisions. The choice of representation, objective, and available information shapes what follows.
Prices, fundamentals, and news arrive over time. Decisions create a portfolio whose value changes with an uncertain future.
Financial data brings structure, uncertainty, and changing conditions. Their importance varies across assets and time horizons.
Policies, participants, and economic conditions evolve. A relationship that appears useful in one period may weaken or reverse in another. Adaptation and stability can pull in different directions.
Many stocks respond to the same event. Neighbouring observations may also share information. A large number of records does not automatically provide an equally large number of independent observations.
Average return leaves out part of the story. A few extreme days can substantially change a result, and recovering from a loss can take time. Two portfolios with similar final wealth may have very different journeys.
The size of price moves, position sizes, and holding periods all affect returns. A model can predict many small moves correctly and still lose money on a few large mistakes.
Changing a portfolio involves trading. Fees, bid–ask spreads, and slippage can reduce a paper advantage. A simulation captures only the execution effects included in its rules.
Understanding fees · Investor.gov ↗A strategy selected from many alternatives may fit one historical period unusually well. Future observations, revised data, and a language model's memory of historical events can also make a result look more predictive than it is.
A market arrives as numbers and words. Follow the price history and daily news as expert weights change.
Initial value = 1 · Adaptive vs. daily equal-weight
Press Next day or Play to see prices and a news brief arrive together.
The three experts represent virtual strategy funds. Their 60-day returns are generated by fixed functions. The adaptive portfolio uses the weights available at the start of each day, then applies wᵢ ← wᵢ exp(η rᵢ / 0.01) and normalizes for the next day. The equal-weight portfolio returns to one third per expert each day.
Each day reveals its returns and a fictional news brief together. The news shows another type of market data: text. These demo experts do not read the news; their returns are fixed. A headline alone does not explain a day's price move.
Both portfolios pay the same one-way fee on traded notional, including the initial investment. Trades account for weight drift and the cash needed to pay fees. Internal trading within the virtual funds, slippage, and market impact are omitted. Maximum drawdown is measured from the highest observed portfolio value.
This illustration uses synthetic teaching data, not real market returns. The illustration does not establish a regret guarantee or imply profitability in financial markets.
Some connections between 3073 and financial markets. Your approach can go beyond any of these.
StockBench provides a starting point for simulated, sequential portfolio decisions.
Profits, losses, and their size do not affect your grade. This includes unrealized losses on positions you still hold.
We want you to find something interesting and keep exploring it. Even an algorithm that keeps losing money, no matter what you try, can be an interesting discovery. Understanding why is valuable too.
Code and cached data are included. Start with an offline baseline, then use a traditional method, an LLM, or your own agent.
